BigBlue 28 W solar charger review

A 28 W foldable USB solar charger with N-type cells at 25.4%, two USB-C and one USB-A port, IP44, at 1.5 lb. It charges devices directly; it stores nothing.

Efficient cells, honest limits

BigBlue’s 28 W charger uses N-type cells at a stated 25.4% efficiency, with a front surface free of metal lines to reduce shading. It folds to 11 × 6 × 1.4 in and weighs 1.5 lb. Two USB-C ports and one USB-A port each deliver 5 V at up to 3 A, with a combined 5 V at 4.8 A, roughly 24 W.

No battery

BigBlue says it twice: this panel does not store energy. It charges what is plugged in while the sun shines, and output varies with sunlight, angle and the device. Pair it with a power bank to bank the day’s energy.

Practical advice in the listing

Keep phones and tablets in the shade: direct sun can trigger their thermal protection and stop charging. Do not use the panel behind a window or windscreen. The surface is rated IP44, enough for light rain and fog.

What it gets right, and what it leaves out

Strengths

  • The highest cell efficiency on this shelf, 25.4%
  • Two USB-C ports, where the ELECOM has none
  • Clear instructions: keep the phone in the shade, do not use behind a window

Compromises

  • 5 V only: 4.8 A combined is about 24 W at the ports, so no fast charging
  • IP44 is splash resistance, not waterproofing
  • No battery, so output stops when the sun goes

Questions owners ask about this one

Why does my phone stop charging?

BigBlue warns that a phone in direct sun can trigger its own thermal protection. Keep the device in the shade while the panel stays in the sun.

Can it fast-charge a phone?

No. Each port supplies 5 V at up to 3 A, and the three together 5 V at 4.8 A. That is standard USB charging, not PD fast charging.

Does it work through a car window?

BigBlue does not recommend using it behind a window or windscreen.

Our score

7.8/ 10

A light, efficient 28 W panel with USB-C, from a long-established brand. Its 5 V ports charge steadily, not fast, and it stores nothing.
