A connected controller is an MPPT unit whose display lives in a phone, and that choice has consequences worth listing. The electrical specifications are unchanged — charge current, maximum PV voltage, efficiency, battery profiles — and everything new sits in the communication. The protocol decides the range and the friction: Bluetooth means standing next to the locker, Wi-Fi means a network and an account, and a proprietary bus means the maker’s own accessories. What a buyer should ask, and what the better listings answer, is what the controller does when the phone is absent: whether it keeps logging, whether the settings survive a power cut, and whether anything can be changed without the app at all. Networked accessories — a shunt, a temperature sensor, a second controller — turn a single device into a system, and they only talk to their own family. Firmware support is the part that ages: an app that stops being updated eventually stops being installable, and a controller whose only interface is that app becomes a box with no display.
