Who writes this, and where the money comes from

An affiliate site that says so on every page that earns, and names the places where that income would pull a verdict if nothing were holding it.

PowerVerdict compares portable power stations and solar generator kits, LiFePO4, leisure and motorhome batteries, folding and rigid solar panels, balcony kits, micro, hybrid and sine wave inverters, MPPT and PWM charge controllers, DC-DC chargers, inverter generators, home backup supplies and UPS units — and the cable, connectors, fuses, breakers, busbars, shunts and meters that hold an installation together — across 61 categories and five language editions. It is a small independent editorial project, not a shop, not a manufacturer and not a media group.

The subject is equipment that makes, stores, converts or measures electricity away from a fixed mains supply — on a balcony, in a van, at a campsite, or in a house that wants to keep the fridge running through a cut. Several neighbouring subjects belong to sister sites: woodworking routers, saws and sanders; arc welders and metal grinders; multimeters, calipers and thermal cameras; photo printers; sewing and embroidery machines; desk lamps, USB hubs and storage drives. A page here may name one of those as a published feature of a product, but it does not recommend which to buy. Left out entirely: industrial equipment sold by quotation, installation services, and energy tariffs as a subject of their own. What remains is equipment chosen on figures a manufacturer puts in writing and then lived with for years.

One distinction outranks everything else on this shelf, so it goes at the top rather than in a footnote. The watt-hours printed on a battery and the watt-hours it will hand back are not the same quantity. The depth of discharge its chemistry tolerates takes a share, the inverter between the cells and the socket takes another, and most listings publish neither. We print whichever figure the maker gave, say which of the two it is, and never let a nominal capacity stand in for a usable one. The same discipline governs a surge rating, which is a duration as much as a number, and a cycle count, which says nothing at all without the depth it was tested at and the capacity still expected at the end.

Numbers arrive on these pages by a single route: copied from the manufacturer that published them, credited where they appear, and left in that manufacturer’s unit. Three things follow from that. A panel’s peak wattage is reproduced as declared, with the test conditions that produced it, and is never turned into a forecast of what a roof yields in October. A charge controller’s rated current is reported as a property of the device, never as an assurance about a particular string. And no fuse, breaker, isolator or earthing arrangement is described here as making an installation safe: we report the rated current, the direct-current voltage rating or the breaking capacity the maker marks on it, and hand the rest to the maker’s instructions and to the rules where you live.

How PowerVerdict is paid for

Every "Check price" button on the site is an affiliate link to Amazon, and a purchase made after clicking one earns us a commission. The station, the panel or the reel of cable costs you the same either way.

An incentive is only worth disclosing if its direction is disclosed with it. Amazon pays a share of the sale, so a home battery earns us many times what a bag of connectors does. Three things stand in the way of that arithmetic reaching the pages:

  • Earnings have never moved a product up a list. They play no part in the order of any family here. Nobody looks up which reference pays best, and families are arranged by price tier. Where the least expensive station in a family is the right answer, that is where it sits.
  • Costly and useful are unrelated scales. Several of the most confident recommendations on this site are among its cheapest entries — a shunt that converts a guess into a reading, a fuse holder actually rated for direct current, cable one size above the minimum. And moving a panel out of a chimney’s shadow does more for a system than replacing it would.
  • No place on a page has ever been for sale. No fee, no loaned equipment and no arrangement of any description has ever bought one. If that ever changed, the page in question would say so in its own body text, not in a line at the foot of the site.

What this site does not do

Nothing here is sponsored. No list is a "top 10" stitched together from other people’s write-ups. And no order follows what a reference earns, how well a link converts, or what a warehouse happens to be holding this week.

Nor does this site sell on specifications. A large number writes persuasive copy and poor advice, and a page organised around the biggest figure on the box reliably finishes by recommending the most expensive product in the family. Every verdict states what it rests on: the specifications, manuals and compatibility lists a manufacturer publishes, the standards that define those figures, and what long-term owners consistently report. Where a judgement leans mostly on one of the three, the review names it.

Corrections

Prices move, models are withdrawn, firmware updates change how a device behaves, and manufacturers revise a management system, an inverter board or a cell supplier without touching the model name. If something here is wrong, write and say so: it gets fixed, and the change is noted. Every page carries the date it was last reviewed.
