Solar cable is not simply cable that happens to be used on a roof: it is built to a standard for a job where it is sunlit, hot, cold, and expected to last decades. The cross-section in square millimetres decides the voltage drop over a run, and the arithmetic is unforgiving — a long thin cable between panel and controller gives away watts as heat, which is why the recommended size grows with the distance. The standard printed along the sheath is the specification that separates real solar cable from lookalikes, together with the voltage rating for DC and the temperature range, which typically spans well below freezing to well above the temperature of a black roof in August. UV and ozone resistance is the property that ordinary PVC lacks: it does not fail suddenly, it chalks, cracks and then leaks.
