Care and maintenance: the checks that catch things early

A battery system has very little to maintain and a small number of things that fail slowly enough to be caught. Nearly all of them announce themselves as heat, a drifting reading, or a state of charge that never quite returns to full.

Maintenance here is inspection rather than work, and the schedule is short enough to actually be followed.

Check the joints under load

Run something substantial, then check the temperature along the main cable and at every terminal, fuse holder and busbar. The cable should be uniform; a warm spot is a joint with resistance, and resistance at a joint only goes one way. This finds more than any other check on the list.

Watch the monitor for drift rather than for numbers

A monitor that reports a full charge every week and then stops doing so is telling you something before any capacity is measurably lost. A percentage that never reaches full, or that falls unevenly, points at either the bank or the charging rather than at the instrument.

Clean what actually costs output

A concentrated deposit on a panel costs far more than a uniform film, so bird droppings and leaf debris are worth removing and general dust rarely is. Use what the panel maker permits; anti-reflective coatings are why those instruction lists exist.

Store it the way the chemistry wants

Lead-acid full and topped up, lithium part-charged and cool, both at the level and interval the maker publishes. Disconnect so nothing is quietly drawing, note the state of charge, and check once during the season rather than at the end of it.

Keep the paperwork with the system

Manuals, the settings entered into the monitor and the charger, the cable sizes and the fuse ratings fitted. In three years that file answers questions that no amount of inspection can, and it is the difference between diagnosing a system and re-deriving it.

How often is worth checking?

Twice a year for a fixed installation, plus once during any long idle period. The idle check is the one that matters, because a pack drifting towards its cut-off is recoverable while it is still above it.

What single check finds the most?

Feeling along the cable and the joints under a heavy load. Heat at a connection is the visible symptom of a joint going bad, and it appears long before anything stops working.
