The best cable glands for 2026

A gland is what lets a cable pass through a wall, a roof or an enclosure without letting water follow it, and it is specified by two numbers that are easy to confuse. The thread size — M16, M20, PG11 and their neighbours — is the hole it fits; the clamping range is the cable diameter it seals, and a cable thinner than the range is not held, while a thicker one does not close. Both are printed, and both have to be read. The ingress rating is achieved only when the gland is tightened onto a cable inside that range and fitted with its seal and locknut; the rating on the box assumes correct installation. Material decides the life outdoors: polyamide is cheap and, unless UV-stabilised, becomes brittle in a few summers; brass and stainless last longer and conduct, which matters where earthing is involved. The temperature range matters on a roof. Whether a locknut and a sealing washer are included is a small thing that decides whether the parts drawer is complete. We compare thread size, clamping range, ingress rating, material and UV resistance, temperature range and supplied parts.
