The best busbars for 2026

A busbar is a block of metal with several studs, and it exists because stacking five ring terminals on a battery post is how a good installation becomes a warm one. The current rating follows the cross-section of the bar and is published for a stated temperature rise; a bar rated 250 A is rated for the whole bar, not per stud. The number and size of studs decides how many circuits land on it, and the sizes are commonly M8 or M10 to take the lugs already on the cables. Material and plating read as on any high-current joint: copper or brass, tinned or nickel-plated, and the plating is what stops the surface oxidising into a resistance. The cover is a safety item rather than a finish — an exposed positive bar in a locker is a short waiting for a spanner — and the better ones are removable without disturbing the connections. Mounting and the creepage distance between a positive and a negative bar mounted side by side are the last two specifications, and the second is why they are sold in pairs with a stated separation.
