The best solar trickle chargers for 2026

A trickle charger is a small panel that offsets the current a parked vehicle draws for its alarm and its clock, and it is bought after a flat battery rather than before one. The wattage is modest by design — a few watts to a couple of dozen — and it should be read against what the vehicle actually leaks, which is a milliamp figure the vehicle maker rarely publishes. What decides whether the panel is safe to leave connected is the regulation: a bare panel wired to a battery can overcharge it in summer, so either a small controller is built in or one is required. Reverse-current protection — a blocking diode — is what stops the battery discharging back through the panel at night, and its absence turns the charger into a slow drain. The connection method separates the shelf: a cigarette plug that only works if the socket is live with the ignition off, crocodile clips on the terminals, or a fused ring-terminal lead left permanently attached. Mounting is a suction cup on the windscreen or a bracket, and the cable length has to reach from one to the other. We compare panel wattage, regulation, reverse-current protection, connection method, mounting and cable length.

    • A daily yield figure — 100 Wh — which turns a wattage into something usable
    • No night-time drain, stated, which is what a controller is for on a parked vehicle
    • No cable length, so where the panel can sit relative to the battery is unknown

Best for: Powering a small off-grid load as well as maintaining a battery.
