A station is one box that works out of it and cannot be repaired or resized piece by piece; separate components cost more effort and let each part be chosen, replaced and upgraded on its own. Portability usually decides it before anything else does.
The same energy can be bought as a single appliance or as a set of parts, and the two purchases behave very differently over time.
What the integrated box gives up
Everything inside is chosen by the maker and matched to everything else, which is why it works immediately. It also means the inverter size, the battery chemistry and the solar input window are fixed, and a shortfall in any one of them is a reason to replace the whole unit.
What separate components ask for
A battery, a charger, an inverter, a controller, cable sized for the currents, fusing and a place to put it all. Each is specified independently and each can be replaced independently, which is the entire argument for the approach.
Where portability settles it
Anything that has to be carried to a campsite, a market stall or a different room is a station. Anything that lives in a van, a boat or a building can be either, and the fixed installation is where separate components start to pay.
The question that outlives the purchase
What happens when the battery reaches the end of its life — because it will, in both architectures. In one, that is a component. In the other, it may be the product.
What people ask before they order
Can a station’s battery be replaced?
On some models the maker documents a replacement path or a service route; on many it does not. It is worth establishing before purchase, because it decides what the unit is worth in a few years.
Are separate components cheaper?
Not necessarily once cable, fusing, a case and the labour are counted. What they buy is the ability to change one part without replacing all of them.
