MC4 began as one manufacturer’s product name and became the generic term for the round locking connector on solar panel leads. Connectors that look identical are not necessarily made to the same tolerances, and makers state explicitly whether theirs may be mated with another brand.

The contact is crimped to the cable with a die that matches both the contact and the cross-section. A crimp made with the wrong tool looks finished and adds resistance that only shows up under full sun and full current.
