This page gives a method and deliberately no numbers, because a fuse rating belongs to a specific cable in a specific installation.
The three published figures it comes from
The current-carrying capacity of the cable, at the temperature and the installation method it will actually see; the maximum continuous current the load can draw, from the appliance’s own documentation; and the battery’s short-circuit capability, from the pack’s datasheet. The fuse sits above the second, below the first, and its breaking capacity sits above the third.
Why the fuse type is part of the answer
Blade, bolt-down, cylindrical and class-T devices differ in breaking capacity and in how fast they act, not only in appearance. The holder matters too: a holder rated below the fuse it accepts is a common weak point, and it is the part that gets warm.
Where it goes
As close to the battery terminal as the installation allows, because the unprotected length is the length in front of it. On multi-battery banks, each battery’s own lead is a candidate for protection as well as the main feed.
What the manuals say
Inverters, chargers and controllers each specify a protection device for their input, and those specifications take precedence over a general calculation. Where two of them disagree, the more conservative is the one that gets installed.

Why does breaking capacity matter more on batteries?
Because a healthy bank can pour an extraordinary current into a short circuit. A fuse that cannot interrupt that current does not protect anything, whatever its rating says.
Does each branch need its own fuse?
Each cable that can carry a fault needs protection sized for that cable. A main fuse at the battery and smaller ones at a distribution point is the usual arrangement, and every component maker documents its own requirement.
