The supply comes first

A charger adds a substantial continuous load to a property. Whether the existing supply accommodates it, and whether load management or an upgrade is needed, is an assessment of the building rather than a property of the charger. It is done before selection, not after.

The protection arrangement

Charging installations have specific requirements for residual-current protection and for earthing, and those requirements are set by national wiring rules. Some wallboxes include protective functions and some expect them upstream; the maker states which.

What the vehicle decides

The rate at which a car accepts alternating current is set by its on-board charger, not by the wallbox. A charger capable of more will not make the car charge faster, which is the specification most often mismatched in this purchase.

What is genuinely a product choice

Connector type, cable length or a socket, whether it is tethered, how it authenticates, whether it can be scheduled or controlled remotely, and whether it integrates with solar generation. Those are comparable between products; the rest is an assessment of the house.

What is the connector standard?

In Europe the alternating-current connector is defined by IEC 62196, commonly called Type 2. The vehicle’s own inlet and its on-board charger decide what rate it can accept.
