A voltage reading is the easiest measurement to take on a battery and the least informative, which is an unfortunate combination.

What a load does to the reading

Draw current and the voltage sags; stop and it recovers. A bank read while the fridge compressor is running and the same bank read a minute later give two different answers, neither of which is the state of charge.

Just after charging, a battery holds a surface charge that reads high and then decays. The published voltage-to-charge tables assume a rested battery, and resting means hours rather than minutes.

Lead-acid has a sloping discharge curve, which is what makes voltage gauges usable on it at all. LiFePO4 is deliberately flat: the same reading covers a very wide span of remaining energy, and a voltmeter simply cannot separate them.

A shunt-based monitor sits in the negative path and integrates current over time, counting what went in and what came out. It needs to be set up with the bank’s capacity and it needs a full charge occasionally to re-synchronise, but it reports a quantity rather than a symptom. Why is the flat curve of LiFePO4 a problem for gauges?

A voltage-based gauge needs voltage to change as the battery empties. On this chemistry it barely does until the very end, so the gauge reads full for a long time and then falls off quickly.
