What is a hybrid cool box?

One with two cooling systems: a compressor, which can reach temperatures below ambient regardless of how hot it is, and a thermoelectric element, which cools by a fixed margin below ambient. The first is far more capable and uses more power intermittently; the second is simpler.

Why does the missing battery protection matter?

Because a compressor box left running on a vehicle battery will flatten it. Battery protection cuts the box off at a set voltage to leave enough to start the engine. Six of nine boxes here name it; this one does not.
