Charge it the way the maker describes
First-charge instructions differ between products, and several units calibrate their state-of-charge display during it. Where a reduced charging rate is offered, note what the manual says it changes, because that setting is the one that affects the pack over years.
Find out what it really delivers
Plug in a known load, note the time, and watch. A kettle answers in minutes and a lamp in hours, and either measurement is worth more than the rating. What you are looking for is the gap between the printed capacity and the energy that reaches the socket, and it exists on every unit.
Learn the sounds and the limits
Fans start at a load and a temperature; some units reduce output when warm. Note where that happens, in a room and at a load you can reproduce. A station that shuts down during a power cut is a surprise; the same station shutting down on a Sunday afternoon is information.
Then decide how it will be stored
Storage level, temperature and a check interval, all of which the maker states. A station bought for emergencies spends its life waiting, and how it waits decides how much of it is left.

Follow whatever the maker states for the first charge, because it varies between products and some units calibrate their gauge on it. After that, the storage guidance in the manual takes over.
Is it worth running it flat once?
Once, deliberately, with a known load and a timer, tells you the usable capacity rather than the printed one. Doing it repeatedly is a different matter, and the manual says what the pack tolerates.
