What changed

A conventional alternator holds a roughly fixed output voltage whenever the engine runs. A variable-output alternator adjusts it, cutting back when the starter battery is full and raising it during deceleration to recover energy. The starter battery is content with this. A leisure battery wired in parallel behind a relay is not: it sees whatever the vehicle decided to do.

It accepts a wide input range and produces a controlled output profile for the chemistry it is set to, isolating the leisure bank from the vehicle’s decisions. Most models are switchable between chemistries and most take an ignition signal so they only run when the engine does.

Solar on the roof and a mains charger for when a hookup is available. A well-behaved installation lets all three coexist without fighting, and several DC-DC units include a solar input for exactly this reason.

Does a split-charge relay still work?

On older, fixed-output alternators it can. With a variable-output alternator it passes on whatever voltage is present at the time, which is the problem it was never designed for.
