It is a market convention for the physical box: length, width, height and terminal arrangement. It says nothing about capacity, chemistry or performance, and two batteries of the same group can be entirely different products.
Group sizes are useful for exactly one thing — finding something that fits the space — and they are regularly read as though they meant more.
What the convention fixes
External dimensions and the position and type of the terminals. That is what makes a replacement drop into an existing tray and reach the existing cables, which is the problem the convention was invented to solve.
What it leaves entirely open
Chemistry, capacity, cranking performance, cycle life, whether the battery is designed for starting or for deep discharge. A lead-acid starter battery and a LiFePO4 leisure battery can share a group designation and share nothing else.
Where the confusion costs money
A leisure installation specified by group size gets a box that fits and a capacity that may be unrelated to what was needed. The useful specification remains watt-hours, depth of discharge, and the current limits — with the group size checked afterwards as a fitting question.
What to measure instead
The tray, in millimetres, with the terminals’ required position noted and the hold-down accounted for. Then choose on the electrical specification and confirm the physical one, in that order.
What people ask before they order
Is a group size the same everywhere?
No. Several regional conventions exist side by side, and a battery is often listed under more than one of them. The dimensions in millimetres are the reliable comparison.
Why does terminal position matter?
Because the vehicle’s cables reach a specific way. A battery that fits the tray but has its terminals reversed may put a positive post within reach of a bonnet or a bracket.
