Should a PWM controller charge lithium?
It can, if the maker provides a lithium profile — which this one does. What PWM cannot do is convert surplus panel voltage into current, so the yield is lower than MPPT on a mismatched array. The chemistry support and the tracking type are separate questions.
What do charge statistics add?
A history rather than a reading. Seeing what a system produced over a fortnight tells you whether a panel is shaded, dirty or failing, which a live voltage cannot. It is the cheapest form of the monitoring a shunt would give.
