Why they are not interchangeable

A ferrule is compressed into a square or hexagonal section around stranded wire. An MC4 solar contact is a barrel crimped to a specific profile that the connector housing then seals around.

A tool for one makes a crimp the other was not designed for, and the crimp still looks finished from the outside.

The ferrule tool

Self-adjusting across 0.25 to 10 mm², handling insulated and uninsulated ferrules both, with 1800 ferrules supplied.

Insulated ferrules grip the wire’s own insulation for strain relief; uninsulated ones crimp the conductor alone. A tool that takes both covers whatever is in the drawer.

The MC4 tool

Names its carbon steel, which the ferrule tool does not — the same maker publishing the material on one page and not the other.

What neither publishes

A crimping force, or the standard the profile conforms to. That is true of every crimping tool in this catalogue, and a crimp is a mechanical joint with a defined pull-out strength.
