Pure sine or modified

The single most important thing to establish about any inverter. A pure sine wave is what the grid delivers; a modified one is a stepped approximation that costs less to produce.

Motors run hotter on it. Some medical equipment refuses it. Certain electronics buzz audibly. And nothing about the outside of the box tells you which you have bought.

The two ratings

Continuous and peak. A compressor or a pump draws several times its running current at the instant it starts, and an inverter rated only for the running figure shuts down every time the fridge cycles.

What gets forgotten

The input side. A 2000 W inverter at 12 V draws well over 150 A from the battery, and the cable and fuse to carry that are a separate purchase — one this catalogue has several shelves for.

What the pages check

Whether efficiency is published, and at what load. Efficiency at full output and at idle are different numbers, and idle draw is what empties a battery overnight.
