Why direct current needs its own breaker

Alternating current crosses zero a hundred times a second, and an arc drawn on opening extinguishes itself at one of those crossings. Direct current never does.

A DC breaker is built to stretch and quench that arc mechanically. An alternating-current breaker at the same amperage is not a substitute, whatever the label says.

What the breaker listing publishes

The indicator is the useful part. A handle position tells you what the breaker was set to; the window tells you what it did — and a breaker that tripped an hour ago looks identical to one somebody switched off.

Breaking capacity, trip curve, polarity

A breaking capacity, which is the fault current it can interrupt and survive. And a trip curve, which decides whether an inverter can start behind it without tripping it.

And polarity

On a DC breaker the direction of current decides how the arc is blown into the chute. Neither DC breaker in this catalogue marks it.
