Charge controllers, MPPT and PWM

Both kinds of controller from one supplier, which makes the difference easy to see.

PWM against MPPT

A pulse-width controller connects the panel to the battery and lets the battery pull the panel voltage down to its own level. Simple, cheap, and it discards the difference.

A maximum power point tracker finds the voltage at which the panel produces the most power and converts it. In cold weather and weak light — when a panel’s optimum voltage sits well above battery voltage — the gap is real.

What a stated amperage means

The controller’s rating is its output current to the battery, not the panel wattage. Twenty amps at 12 V is roughly 240 W of panel; at 24 V, twice that. Reading the rating without the system voltage gives the wrong panel.

What the pages mark

Whether a controller’s claimed tracking is described at all beyond the acronym, and whether the Bluetooth app is named or merely implied.

The practical check

Maximum panel open-circuit voltage. Exceeding it destroys a controller, and cold weather raises panel voltage above its rated figure.
